Bartending
Mini-Course
Winter 2004
Mondays 7-9 or Thursdays
Instructor: Jim Knapp
Email: jimknapp@umich.edu
Course Web Page: www.umich.edu/~jimknapp/BarClass.html
Grading:
While the university does not award credit for this course, it does award a
certificate of completion to those who pass. As such, I will be grading you
based on your performance and participation.
Attendance:
The Monday and Thursday sessions are two distinct classes; no night-swapping is
permitted without instructor permission (i.e. please do NOT assume that if you
are enrolled in Monday night’s class you can simply show up to Thursday night’s
class instead, or vice versa). Also, because of the length of this course, any
student who misses more than one class session will not be allowed to pass. Of course, it would be to your detriment to
miss even one session, as I will not be reviewing any of the material prior to
the final. Besides, you’ll hurt my feelings.
Quizzes:
Quizzes based on the previous week’s class are not outside the realm of
possibility (i.e. please expect them).
Final Exam:
The final exam will consist of questions based on the lecture material and
handouts. Questions will allow you to demonstrate your ample knowledge of the
mechanics of bartending, different types of alcohol, and responsible alcohol
service. Also, expect to provide the recipes for some popular mixed drinks and
shots.
Web Page: I
will post a number of relevant documents on the class website, including class
outlines, a copy of this syllabus, etc. You will also find links to other
useful and interesting websites which might enhance your bartending experience.
In addition, in the unlikely event I will need to cancel a class, I will post a
notice to that effect on the website. Please check the website each Monday or Thursday
afternoon prior to coming to class.
Class Sessions: My plan is to split each meeting up into two parts. We will start with a
lecture and discussion on an area of particular interest, take a short break,
and then return to work with the bottles and barware. Although two hours are
allotted for each class, consider that an extreme, not the norm. Expect each
class to run about 1½ hours.
General:
The subject matter of this class is, by nature, fun and enjoyable. I will do my
best to teach it that way. If at any time you have general questions about any
aspect of bartending, please feel free to ask them in class or via e-mail. If
at any time you have any suggestions about the class, like instruction on a
topic of particular interest or an idea on how to make the class more useful,
please e-mail me and let me know.
Like you, I am taking 6
weeks out of my busy schedule for this course. As such, I do not intend
anything to be a waste of time; everything we discuss and do will be fundamental to the trade of bartending.
